Panerai Radiomir.

Owning a Panerai watch is a dream for many people. But what many don’t know is that Panerai used to be a small producer of boring technical equipment, like depth meters and compasses. This all stopped in 1935 when Panerai signed a contract with the Italian Navy to produce watches that were easy to read under water. Panerai had never produced a ‘time-telling device’ before and asked for help to another watch brand: Rolex. In 1938 the Panerai watches were only launched for the Italian Navy by the name: ‘Radiomir’. The movement, cases and crowns of the Radiomir were all produced by Rolex. Later Panerai started using less expensive ‘Angelus’ movements. After this they stopped the production of timepieces for 50 years. Now Panerai is an independent watch brand and it doesn’t need the help of Rolex anymore. The name Radiomir comes from the luminescent (and radioactive) material Radiomir. This material made sure that people in that time could read the time properly from their watch under water. Of course it is now illegal to use radioactive materials in watches. Panerai had to look for another luminescent material for their watches and they found it. Now Panerai uses ‘SuperLuminova’ in their watches. SuperLuminova is a luminescent material that is not radioactive. The very first watch that Panerai designed is the Radiomir and since its birth the design has not changed.
