IWC Big Pilot.

The Big Pilot is the flagship of IWC. With its 46,2 mm diameter you can say that the watch is really fashionable. The Big Pilot has one of the largest automatic movements ever made by IWC. In 1930 IWC started building relatively large wristwatches. The Big Pilot was specifically produced by IWC for aviators in 1939. It was the largest wristwatch ever made. The watch had a diameter of 55 mm. This incredibly large watch was supplied to the German airforce in 1940. IWC made the watch so that it was possible to attach it to the outside of an aviator suit. The Big Pilot was inspired by the legendary ‘Ju 52’ aircraft. The Ju 52 was a German transport aircraft. The aircraft thank its excellent reputation to the fundamental thoughts that were also behind all Pilot’s Watches: features were omitted, reduced in size and simplified to make it even lighter. Because of this it would also be easier to service and maintain. The present Big Pilot may be less imposing then the old one, but it is still very big. The big Pilot is a turdy, but yet elegant men’s watch. It is one of the crown Jewels of IWC.
